Success Coaching Leads to Postsecondary Career Opportunities

Center for Black Educator Development

The Center for Black Educator Development’s Junior Servant Leader program provides summer success coaching opportunities to Philadelphia high school students entering grades 10-12. The five-week summer apprenticeship program builds a pipeline of young adults who are then eligible to apply for the organization’s Black Teacher Pipeline Fellowship.

Junior Servant Leaders’ responsibilities include leading small groups, 1:1 instruction, supporting literacy instruction to elementary age students that “reflect the cultural background and share common socio-political interests.” The intensive coaching requires attendance at professional development and coaching sessions too. The summer opportunity provides mentors with an hourly wage working in their community to support their younger peers while also building leadership and gaining valuable experience to inform their career path.
