There are numerous evidence-based approaches to supporting P-12 students’ holistic thriving. Learn how partnerships between institutions of higher education, schools, districts, and nonprofit organizations can make a breadth of opportunities available for higher education students to serve and work in roles as tutors, mentors, student success coaches, postsecondary transition coaches, and more, in P-12 schools and out-of-school time programs.
Student Success Coaching
Peer Power Foundation at the University of Memphis
Program Overview:
- The Peer Power Foundation, in partnership with the University of Memphis and Shelby County School District, inspires and empowers youth to achieve academic success.
- The organization trains undergraduate and graduate students, who are hired through Federal Work-Study and other supplemental funds, to provide tutoring and mentoring services in high school classrooms at thirteen school sites.
- Peer Power Student Success Coaches provide academic support in math and English classrooms while encouraging youth to value education, engage in active learning, and be personally accountable for their futures.
Program Impact:
- The Peer Power Foundation has provided 1,500,000 hours of tutoring and mentoring services since 2004.
- 180 college students are currently employed by the program.
- Students with a Peer Power Success Coach are more likely to show up for school and achieve higher percentages of A’s and B’s from quarter 1 to quarter 4.
